Meet Kim and Joe Streker

Meet Kim and Joe Streker - they are the entrepreneurs behind Sheeples Fine Fibres. They met when both were college professors and soon realized that Kim’s life-long love of knitting coupled with Joe’s farm and machinery expertise presented them with a perfect opportunity to combine their passions. From a modest start with the purchase of 10 sheep and a spinning wheel, and after five years of thoroughly researching the fibre industry, they quit teaching and moved to a 1,300- acre farm north of Winnipeg where their flock has grown to over 300 sheep fed by hay that they grow themselves.

But these aren’t just any sheep. Knowing that the quality of fleece from wool sheep is much softer, finer, shinier, and longer than that of meat breed sheep, Kim and Joe handpicked specialty wool sheep that have been carefully bred to produce unique high-quality wool. The superiority of Sheeples wool is apparent to customers as they often ask “What kind of fibre is this? I’m allergic to wool but I can wear this!”

On December 1, 2008, Sheeples celebrated the first anniversary of the launch of their fibre processing mill which includes a Carder, Pindrafter, and Spinner that have the capacity to produce up to 12,000 pounds of fibre per year. From custom processing of wool and exotic fibres, to sales of rovings, yarns and clothing, to hands-on classes at the mill, Sheeples sells directly to the public at craft shows and by phone (204-278-3297).
